When you’re in Alabama during winters and want to take a hike, don’t let the conditions stop you. Hiking during winters can be a relaxing experience. It’ll soothe your senses and keep you healthy and fit. The state doesn’t get much snow during winter and the season offers certain benefits to the hikers.

Due to the cold weather, people mostly prefer to stay indoors. This reduces the crowds outdoors and the trails offer some entirely different experiences. Here, we’ve presented some of the best spots that you can consider for your winter hiking trips:

1. Cane Creek Canyon Nature Preserve in Tuscumbia

This nature preserve has an abundance of native animals and plants. Besides, it also offers some fascinating rock formations, waterfalls, creeks, and scenic views. It is spread across 700 acres and has 11 miles of trails for hiking. You’ll also find camping sites and spots for picnicking while exploring Cane Creek Canyon nature preserve.

2. Bankhead National Forest and the Sipsey Wilderness in Jasper

You’ll find more than 90 miles of trails in the Bankhead National Forest. Upon visiting this forest, you can indulge in some exciting outdoor activities. They include biking, horseback riding, riding the trails with an ATV, and hiking. The Sipsey Wilderness is also a great spot for hiking and horseback riding.

It offers some specific trails for these activities. One thing worth noting is that motorized vehicles are not permitted in the Sipsey Wilderness. Group hiking in this area is limited to 10 individuals.

3. High Falls Park in Grove Oak

High Falls Park is located on top of the Sand Mountain in the Dekalb County. This hidden marvel in the mountains of Alabama’s northeast has some excellent offerings for its visitors. They include pavilions, hiking trails, a walking bridge, and some spectacular views.

4. Wheeler National Refuge in Decatur

This wildlife refuge was established by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1938. It acts as a breeding ground for many migratory birds. During its early stages, the wildlife refuge was more of an experiment. The intention was to determine whether attracting migratory waterfowl to a multipurpose impoundment was possible.

Wheeler National Refuge was the first ever refuge to be superimposed on a hydro-electric impoundment. Although it was designated as a refuge for waterfowls, it also protects many other species of birds. It provides safe environs for more than 295 bird species to rest and nest. These species include over 30 waterfowl species and an increasing number of Sandhill cranes.

Additionally, the refuge also offers a safe place for a small number of Whooping cranes. Towards the end of the 20th century, Whooping Crane Eastern Partnership was formed. The aim of this partnership was to restore the population of whooping cranes in eastern part of North America. You’ll find some easy hiking trails spread throughout this wildlife refuge. These trails are popular among many hikers and birdwatchers.

5. Monte Sano State Park in Huntsville

Monte Sano State Park has 20 miles of trails for hiking and biking. Upon exploring these trails, you’ll get to see some breathtaking views of the surroundings. This nature preserve is spread across a vast area of 2,500 acres. It has been attracting visitors from distant places since the 19th century. You’ll find 14 vacation cottages, picnic areas, camping areas, and pavilions in Monte Sano State Park.

Additionally, there are flower gardens in this nature preserve as well. There are some self-guided trails in the area. Among the more challenging ones is the High Trail. It takes you through a small quarry and Monte Sano Hotel’s remains.

There are certain things about bed and breakfasts or B&Bs that make them a wonderful choice for accommodations. Opportunities to mingle with other guests and personalized services are some of its benefits. Usually, a bed and breakfast is a private home that an individual owns.

This would mean sharing some common rooms and dining with fellow guests. Communication and courtesy are the two things that would make your stay a pleasant experience at B&Bs. So, here are certain things that you must know before you book your stay with a bed and breakfast:

1. Communicate your needs to the host

It’s absolutely necessary that you communicate your expectations and needs before booking your accommodation. Most of the B&Bs offer services and amenities that are specially tailored to suit the needs of their guests. However, the policies of each bed and breakfast can vary. Let your host know about certain dietary restrictions, room preferences, and food allergies that you may have.

If you have any physical disabilities, ask your host if there’s any room accessible for the differently-abled. Ask whether the B&B is child-friendly if you’re traveling with your entire family, including kids. The owners of small properties often welcome the guests personally. So, if you’re planning to book your stay in one of these properties, disclose your arrival and departure times.

If you’re planning a celebration, ask your host about the facilities available for the event. Some of the B&B owners would be happy to accommodate some special requests for the occasion.

2. Know whether you can have your breakfast elsewhere

One of the memorable experiences of a B&B is sharing a home-cooked breakfast with fellow guests. Generally, breakfast is an essential part of a B&B accommodation. Sometimes, you might want to have some privacy or you’ll be in a mood to try something different.

You might feel that you can save on breakfast if you try a local restaurant. The owners of B&Bs can be quite flexible with such requests, but you must let them know in advance.

3. Ask whether your host allows late check-in

Sometimes you may face some unforeseen situations while traveling. Your flight may get delayed, bus may break down, or there might be traffic jams on the way. The B&B owners are always aware of such things. Regardless of this fact, you must ask whether a late check-in is allowed.

If there are any changes in your travel plans, you must inform your host in advance. It’s good to have all the contact details of your B&B before leaving. You can save the phone number and email address of your host on your phone. Having a hard copy of the details would be of great help in certain situations.

4. Tell them if you’re having a pet

Every bed and breakfast has certain rules with regards to pets. Some B&Bs allow only humans. So, if you’re traveling with a pet or pets, let your host know about it. You must also know well in advance whether the B&B is pet-friendly.

5. Ask whether your host can arrange sightseeing trips

Most of the B&Bs have personalized services for their guests. When you’re visiting an unknown destination, you might want to have a sightseeing trip arranged in advance. You can ask your host if he or she can arrange such a trip. In some cases, the owners would take you on sightseeing trips themselves.

The Natchez Trace Parkway takes you through some scenic spots of Tennessee, Franklin, and Natchez. When you travel this parkway using a car, motorcycle, bike, or RV, you’ll be reminded of its history. Since 1938, this parkway has been under the National Park Service. However, the stories that you get to hear date back over 10,000 years.

The parkway has served as an important path for the Native Americans, slave traders, soldiers, and European settlers. It was first used for following game while hunting and later as a commercial route. With an increase in the number of travelers over the years, many inns came up along the path. They served as places to unwind and enjoy a meal.

This way was quite dangerous owing to the presence of highwaymen and bandits and the comforts were few. You can travel at a speed of 50 miles per hour for most of the route. This will allow you to savor the marvelous views. The modern parkway extends to about 33 miles in Alabama.

During your journey, you’ll be reminded of all the souls who’ve journeyed through the route before you. You can stop at six points to enjoy the beautiful offerings of nature.

1. Bear Creek

This spot allows you to take a break after coming in just four miles from the Mississippi line. It offers some grills and picnic tables. You might find the access to water a bit steep. If you think it’s fine, you can bring your fishing gear and get your catch in the creek.

2. Freedom Hills Overlook

On the steep, quarter-mile trail leading to the overlook, you can test your stamina. Upon traveling further, it will take you to the highest point in Alabama on the parkway. You’ll be able to enjoy better views if you’re traveling in late autumn. This is because leaves from the trees fall during this time of the year.

3. Buzzard Roost Spring

It was once used as a source of water for an inn located along the original trace. Today, this spring at Buzzard Roost attracts travelers taking a short walk from the parkway. They’re often drawn to the site upon hearing the soothing sounds of the spring.

4. Colbert Ferry

This is the spot on the Tennessee River, where Chickasaw George Colbert used to operate a ferry. It was in operation from 1800 to 1819. The inn located nearby was a popular stop for those seeking some rest and a good meal. Today, the visitors to Colberty Ferry can launch a boat, try fishing, or simply enjoy the views.

They can settle down at one of the picnic tables and have their lunch. Restrooms are also available in this area. To witness the spot where the inn once stood, you can take a 50-yard walk from the parking area.

5. Lauderdale

The previous stop of Colbert Ferry is located on Tennessee River’s southern shore. Once you cross the river, you can take in some breathtaking views from the northern shore. You’ll also find a small picnic area at this spot.

6. Rock Spring

The natural spring has deep pools with an abundance of small fish. A trail and stepping stones nearby take you across the Colbert Creek into a wooded area. If you visit this spot during spring and fall seasons, you’ll get to watch hundreds of hummingbirds in action. These red-throated birds abound during these seasons to seek the nectar of wildflowers.

One of the best hidden gems of Alabama, the Cane Creek Nature Preserve is excellent for hikers. There’s no entrance fee, but you’ll need to sign in at the kiosk. After signing, you can take a map and explore the trails looping through the preserve.

The Cane Creek Nature Preserve is spread across 700 acres in Tuscumbia. It includes 15 miles of trails for hiking that will take you through canyons, waterfalls, and an old forest.

4. Indulge in some climbing outdoors

Many of the best crags in Alabama can be accessed easily and without any fee. You just need to have good climbing skills and a friend who has the right gear. You’ll get to see high-quality sandstone in Birmingham’s Moss Rock Preserve. Dozens of boulders located in the preserve provide some challenging climbs for the adventure-seekers.

In the northern parts of Alabama, Yellow Bluff would be an ideal place for climbing. It has a cliff line of over 1,500 feet and nearly 40 routes. Most of these paths have been bolted and maintained well.

5. Burn some calories with a trail run

If you’ve spent much of your vacation in Alabama eating and drinking, you must get into a healthier routine. Sometimes, it just won’t be possible for you to work out in the gym. To burn some calories, you’ll need to go on a trail run. There are some climbs in Huntsville’s Blevins Gap Preserve. They’ll give you a serious workout, which would help you get rid of those unwanted calories.

If you’re in Birmingham, head to the Red Mountain Park. There are plenty of trails in this park for you to go running. Both of these areas are free, but you can consider donating a certain amount to the Huntsville Land Trust.

You can choose from a variety of popular foods to pamper your taste buds while in Alabama. The cuisine of this southern state varies from one region to another. However, you’ll surely enjoy the delicious offerings that the state has in store for you. Just like many of its southern neighbors, Alabama is well-known for its barbecue.

Besides, you’ll also get the chance to taste several other southern and soul food favorites. Here we’ll take you through a list of gastronomic delights that you can enjoy in this American state:

1. White Barbecue Sauce

Many of the food historians have praised Robert Gibson for inventing the white barbecue sauce. This famous restaurateur of Big Bob Gibson had invented this sauce in the early 20th century. This sauce is a tangy mixture of vinegar, mayonnaise, black pepper, and horseradish. It would truly enhance the taste of your barbecued meat and is something you can’t afford to miss.

2. Fried Green Tomatoes

Fannie Flagg established this dish as Alabama’s staple when she wrote Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe. This 1987 novel from the Alabama-born author was later adapted into a major film. Fried Green Tomatoes can be made easily at home. It tastes absolutely delicious when served as a side dish or an appetizer with a remoulade.

3. Pulled Pork

There are many different kinds of meat served in the restaurants and barbecue joints of Alabama. Perhaps the most popular among all is the pulled pork. If you prepare pulled pork the right way, the dish will have a smoky flavor. Pulled pork undoubtedly tastes fabulous with the white barbecue sauce. It’s quite irresistible and simply melts in your mouth.

4. Pecan Pie

Made using pecans, sugar, eggs, butter, and corn syrup, the pecan pie is Alabama’s popular dessert. The soil in this part of the United States is ideal for growing pecan trees. Pecan became the official nut of the state in the late 20th century. So, you can imagine how important this nut is to Alabama’s agriculture.

5. Tomato and Mayo Sandwich

People of Alabama know how to make the most of tomatoes during their peak season. So, they put them in some bread, add mayo, and a lip-smacking meal is ready. You can also add lettuce and bacon to the tomato and mayo sandwich.

6. Fried Catfish

For many of the residents of Alabama, the ray-finned fish have been a good source of protein. They used to eat the dish even before the state’s farmers began raising catfish. It can be prepared in several ways, such as grilling and baking. Frying would be the best way to prepare it since the fish is relatively sturdy and thick.

7. Moon Pies

Over the years, this chocolate-covered cookie has gained a lot of fame in the state. The invention of Moon pies took place in Kentucky. It has become a tradition of sorts these days to throw moon pies during Mobile’s annual Mardi Gras. The city has also been dropping a 600-pound mechanical moon pie since 2008 on New Year’s Eve.

8. Chicken Stew

The origins of chicken stew go back to the days of its invention in Tennessee Valley. It was made by a small group of rural communities residing on the border of Tennessee and Alabama. The community members come together to fill their containers during the stew sales. Today, these events occur regularly in the region.

Today, you’ll have several options if you want to book your stay in the destination you’re traveling to. Your budget would be a major factor in determining the type of accommodation you need to book. You also need to consider is the number of individuals traveling with you.

Another factor that must be taken into account is the ease of access that the property offers. The standards in service might differ in the types of accommodations that are offered in recent times. Given below are the popular types of accommodations that you can choose from while booking your stay:

1. Hotels

They’re the most common type of accommodation that tourists choose for their stays. Hotels come in different sizes and characteristics. Depending on your available budget, you can choose from affordable hotels to the more luxurious ones. One great benefit of hotel accommodations is that you’ll have a number of choices in properties.

Before booking, you can also consider the list of amenities that the property offers. Yet another advantage of hotel stays is that such properties are easily accessible. Usually, they’re located close to airports, railway stations, bus terminals, and the popular attractions.

2. Apartments

If you’re traveling to a major city or town, you can book your stay in an apartment. This type of accommodation allows you to cook your own meals and do your own laundry. You’ll also get to save a significant sum if you choose to stay in this type of accommodation.

Many cities in the world also have serviced apartments. These properties come with excellent facilities, such as housekeeping, laundry, and meals. You can choose an apartment for short-term or long-term stays.

3. Bed and breakfasts

Popularly known as B&Bs, these properties are generally located far from the crowded spaces. If you love quiet and peaceful surroundings, a B&B would be an excellent choice. You’ll not only get to stay amid peaceful environs but also have a lot of privacy. Besides, you’ll have breakfast included.

As the B&Bs are usually renovated traditional homes or mansions, you’ll have fewer guests staying at the property. This also ensures personalized services from the owners of the property.

4. Homestays

Homestays give you a feeling of being in a home away from your home. Such type of accommodations are becoming increasingly popular among tourists who prefer a more personalized experience. You literally become a part of the family of the friendly host offering the accommodation. This kind of bonding gives you some pleasant memories to cherish.

You get to share most of the facilities available at the property for the family members. Meals are also eaten with the family. Besides, you have the benefit of enjoying home-cooked food unlike any of the other types of stays.

5. Holiday parks or campgrounds

If you love open spaces, you’ll definitely enjoy staying in holiday parks or campgrounds. They provide sites for setting up tents or parking caravans. Some holiday parks also provide self-contained motel units or simple cabins. You might also have the option of choosing a powered or non-powered site.

Such places are usually located amid enchanting natural surroundings. So, you’ll have the pleasure of staying close to nature and savoring its beauty.

Travelers have gradually started realizing that bed and breakfasts can be excellent alternatives to the traditional hotels. Also called B&Bs, they are usually the old homes or mansions that have undergone restorations. This is why you notice a more classical-style architecture in this type of accommodation. Some of them also have a garden surrounding the property.

Rooms in B&Bs can range from simple to luxurious. This allows you to choose a B&B according to your budget. Staying in this type of accommodation can be a unique and pleasant experience. Here are some of the benefits that you get while staying in a bed and breakfast:

1. Personalized service

In a B&B, there are only a few guests staying at the property. This allows the owner of the property to offer the guests a more personalized service. So, your point of contact would mostly be the owner of the B&B. He or she can also suggest some excellent places nearby that you can explore during your stay.

2. Breakfast is included

As it’s quite obvious from the term given to this type of accommodation, you’ll have breakfast included. This allows you to have more savings. Breakfasts that B&Bs offer can range from a simple local delicacy to a gourmet meal. Some of the B&Bs would even have the breakfasts served in your room.

3. Remote location

Unlike most of the hotels that are located in popular places, you’ll often find B&Bs in remote locations. This would give you the chance to explore certain places that are relatively less traveled. You can also enjoy the more local varieties in food during your time spent in the B&B.

4. Privacy

As this type of accommodation is usually located in remote areas, you’ll get a lot of privacy. B&Bs don’t have many guests staying at the property. So, if you’re looking for a peaceful and quiet atmosphere, choose a B&B for your stay. Such properties would also be great for couples, for whom, privacy is more important than anything else.

5. More security

Owing to the lesser number of guests staying at the property, the bed and breakfasts offer more security. The owner or owners keep a watchful eye on the property at all times. You can’t expect this level of attention from the staff in traditional hotels.

6. Unexpected luxuries

It feels great when you’re treated with a pleasant surprise. The traditional hotels usually mention all their amenities and luxurious offerings in their advertisements. This is not the case with the bed and breakfasts. Their guests often book their stays without much expectations and they might get pampered with some unexpected luxuries.

They might not expect a few extras in food or their bed to have luxury linens. Some of the B&Bs might also provide complimentary drinks during your time spent at the property.

7. Value for money

The room rates of bed and breakfasts might seem higher than that of hotels. Despite this, you’ll find that the overall value for money is greater in B&Bs. You can expect to have more amenities and a much better service in such properties. As a result, the experience of staying in a bed and breakfast is usually pleasant and memorable.

Alabama is a state located in the south-eastern part of the United States of America. It is known among the residents as well as tourists for its offerings in sports, entertainment, and outdoor activities. You’ll also find some charming towns, several miles of white-sand beaches, and beautiful parks in Alabama.

Some deeply held religious views exist across the region. Despite this, the state allows tribal land-based casino establishments with limited options in games. They include bingo machines and slots-style games. In addition to the games, such establishments feature live music and other events.

For those who are not in Alabama or prefer to stay in the comfort of their home, Casinos Jungle is the best platform to know about real money online casinos in United States.

Alabama’s gambling history

There’s a long history that Alabama shares with Mississippi, which is its neighboring state. Steamboat casinos ride along the Mississippi River, giving locals the chance to play table games in them. However, things are quite different in Alabama. Here the gaming laws are very strict. Thus, the residents have no other option but to take a more conservative route.

They participate in most of the games of chance with a great degree of caution. Established at the beginning of the 20th century, the state constitution has certain prohibitions on gambling. It prohibits any game played for financial gain that has an element of chance. This clearly shows that even a game like poker or blackjack can be illegal.

The reason for this is a certain degree of chance involved in such games. Considering this fact, you’ll find it ironical that horse and dog racing is legal in the state. They come under the pari-mutuel betting games, which means that they’re considered as sports. According to the state’s law, these games involve skill and not chance. People participating in them can choose to watch them on television or place wagers.

As the federal laws allow sovereignty of tribal nations, the casino establishments on their land are legal. The games in these casinos are restricted to bingo and slots-style machines. The laws have largely remained unchanged since 1901. This is why the neighboring state, Mississippi, remains a more popular gambling destination than Alabama.

Gambling laws in the state

In a general sense, Alabama considers gambling as an illegal activity. Even if the tribal casinos have the permission to operate with sovereignty, they can’t offer table or specialty games. The examples are roulette and blackjack that are traditional casino games. According to the laws of the state, they can have video gaming machines. The condition is that they must fall under a restrictive gaming license.

The minimum age of people visiting these casinos in Alabama must be 21 years. Most of these venues remain open 24 hours a day. There’s no presence of a state lottery in this state. Alabama doesn’t participate in a wagering program of the state, which is similar in nature. The bingo and raffle games are legal as long as they fall under the category of charitable events.

Online gambling is also illegal in the state technically. Despite this, many of the state residents participate in the activity. The Poarch Band of Creek Native Americans run a few tribal casinos. Among them are the Wind Creek Casino and Hotel Wetumpka, Wind Creek Montgomery, and Wind Creek Atmore.
